What is the origin of wheatgrass as a nutrient for human consumption?

The strain of wheat has been used for thousands of years all around the world for its healing properties. In 1958 Dr Ann Wigmore was singly most responsible for popularizing the use of wheatgrass juice. She tested various weeds and grasses from all over the world, at the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston, and wheatgrass was her favourite due to its high nutrient content.

Why can't wheatgrass be eaten as it is?

The strong cellulose makes it too woody and fibrous for the long and complex intestines in humans. Grass eating animals have short intestines, and thus are able to chew and digest the grass.

What healthy testimonials are attributed to the wonders of wheatgrass?

Dr Ann Wigmore has a long list of testimonials from guests in her institute who have improved with the help of wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass juice has been reported to improve many ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, gastritis, stomach ulcers, pancreas and liver troubles, asthma, constipation, haemorrhoids, colitis, fatigue, female problems, arthritis, anaemia, and athlete's foot.

How can wheatgrass juice give energy and be an appetite depressant?

The starch of the wheat grain is stored energy that when converted to simple sugar is used as a fast energy source. Ideal for athletes as it is a juice and absorbed in less than half an hour. Wheatgrass helps dieters by helping to speed up blood circulation and metabolic rate and by enhancing digestive powers, thereby melting excess fat in the body system.

What other juices mix well with wheatgrass juice?

Other vegetable extracts such as celery, parsley, and spinach mix well with wheat juice. For a complete list of recipes, please visit the RECIPE section of this website.

How much wheatgrass juice should I take?

Wheatgrass juice should be taken in small amounts throughout the day, always on an empty, or nearly empty stomach. In general, two to four ounces every day or every other day is sufficient.
